Unattended cooking fills southeast Minot apartment with smoke

An unattended cooking fire filled a southeast Minot apartment with smoke Tuesday evening, but no one was injured in the incident.

Fire units were dispatched to 3900 11th Ave SE at 8:08 p.m. for a report of smoke filling an apartment. Firefighters from Station 4 located the apartment containing the smoke and conducted a search. While crews were searching the apartment, a resident was located, sleeping in an adjacent bedroom. The resident was removed from the affected apartment and medically evaluated by fire crews on scene.

The source of the smoke was determined to be an unattended pot on the stove. The fire was contained to the pot, causing no damage to the surrounding area. The building was ventilated and all occupants were allowed back into the building.

Minot Fire Department Engine 4 arrived on scene in 4:05, ahead of the national standard of 5:20. On this call, the occupant’s bedroom door was closed, reducing the amount of smoke found in the bedroom.

Cooking fires are the leading cause of fires in the United States, and are also one of the leading causes of fire-related deaths.
