It’s a small change, but the City of Minot Traffic Department is hoping a new sign at the intersection of East Burdick Expressway and 3rd St SE will have a big impact.
Traffic Engineer Stephen Joersz said a static “No Turn on Red” sign for northbound traffic at that intersection has been updated to a lighted “No Right Turn” sign that also turns on when a northbound pedestrian “Walk” indication is illuminated.
This intersection has always had a no-right turn restriction, but the change is intended to make that no-right turn sign more visible and effective.
“We want to raise awareness for pedestrians on the roadway at this intersection,” Joersz said. “Typically when a driver is looking to turn right, they’re mainly looking left or straight for breaks in traffic. They’re not always looking to their right for pedestrians in the roadway.”
The $5,000 dynamic sign was installed this week.
“Safety is always our top priority with everything we do,” Joersz said. “The goal is to improve safety for vehicles and pedestrians by raising the visibility of the No Turn on Red sign.”
